Teeth whitening is designed to remove acquired stains from the teeth and enhance natural tooth colour. Tooth whitening often needs maintaining and repeating every so often for optimal result. There are several factors contributing to staining teeth. Some staining foods and drinks are black tea, coffee, red wine, tomato sauce (ketchup), blueberries, blackberries and some food with strong pigments in them. Other factors include smoking tobacco, certain antibiotics, aging, and genetics. With teeth whitening dental treatments, you will notice a change in the color of your natural tooth enamel.
Diagnosing the reason for tooth staining by a dental professional is important so we understand the root of the tooth discolouration. Normally a brief consultation with the dentist can answer this question. After the consultation, if there are any outstanding dental treatments, such as cavities or an infection, those need to be addressed before the whitening is initiated. The consultation is usually complementary, and Dr. Morgan Nikou can recommend and provide the appropriate treatment to have the most optimal result for your tooth whitening to brighten up your smile.
“In Office” whitening-treatment is carried out in our office. The appointment length is one hour and a half and involves isolating the soft tissues and placing the tooth whitening gel on your teeth directly by our registered staff.
“Take home” whitening treatment is when custom trays are made for the patient in a previous appointment. A whitening kit which includes whitening gel syringes plus these trays are given to the patient during a follow up appointment. At home, the patient herself/himself places the gel in the trays and wear the trays on his/her teeth during the day for several hours or at night time when sleeping over night and repeats the procedure over a few days.
